China-London 04 — A Three-day Convention on Chinese Philately

A highly successful convention on Chinese and Hong Kong Philately was held at the Autumn Stampex from 16th–18th September. An event organised jointly by the China Philatelic Society of London and the Hong Kong Study Circle. Those attending, who came from as far as America, Australia, Hong Kong and the Netherlands, enjoyed a wide range of displays, lectures and visits.

Highlights included talks on the Opium Wars by Eddie Lawrence and the Myths and Legends of China from Martin Farr. While of the displays, one on the Hong Kong Victorian era from Gerald Bodily and Japanese Military Mail including the Russo-Japanese War from Ken Clarke were especially highly regarded. Visits to the British Library and the Royal Philatelic Society of London were enjoyed as well as a cocktail reception at the auctioneers Spink.

Convention chairman Major Pratt commented: ‘The whole convention went extremely well and it was especially pleasing to see so many coming from abroad to attend.’
